The Role

A new position within Imperial's Insights function, acting as an expert in analysing Imperial’s Competitor activity, with a focus on commercial performance.

This role will be fundamental in setting up the business for success through the careful monitoring of competitor activities, analysing and communicating potential opportunities and risks.

Imperial Brands is currently undergoing a strategic transformation to become a consumer-centric organisation and the new Insights function will be a crucial driving force behind this change, placing consumer preferences and demands at the centre of commercial decision making to gain competitive advantage. 

  • Apply financial modelling techniques to interpret competitors’ financial statements to understand their market activity and anticipate future strategies
  • Collating intelligence on competitor activities/initiatives and synthesising into insight products to support consumer strategy
  • The creation of a modelling framework to effectively collate competitor intelligence from various primary and secondary sources
  • The development of material to assist the wider Insights network.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

  • Serve as the reference point for Competitor Intelligence within the Insights function, ensuring that pertinent information is embedded into portfolio, brand and marketing decisions by aligning with other Insights colleagues from the central and region / cluster / market teams
  • Responsible for collating Competitor Intelligence and synthesising into high quality insights to support Imperial’s short-medium term consumer strategy.
  • Responsible for creating and, if necessary, updating, a modelling framework which enables the efficient collation of Competitor Intelligence, ensuring that important insight products can be effectively communicated to relevant stakeholders within the Insights function, as well as other business areas
  • Create and update a framework to replicate competitors’ P&L statement, considering both combustibles and Next Generation Product portfolios, utilising estimated profit pools to assist in decision-making.
  • Provide competitor insights into wargaming workshops to assist with brand, marketing and portfolio decision-making, carrying out the correct analysis depending on market situations and then ensuring that the resulting insights are applied effectively by stakeholders
  • Regularly reappraise the insight standards for Competitor Intelligence, reviewing external best practice and proactively obtaining feedback from stakeholders about their needs and e.g., how methods could be developed.
  • Support the Head of Competitor Insight to create and evolve best-practice insight frameworks for Competitor Intelligence and set up centres of excellence to ensure insight best practices are identified, codified, documented & applied to insights.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Educated to degree level in relevant field.
  • Able to develop & nurture key business stakeholder relationships whilst applying an objective lens to key business problems & issues.
  • Deep knowledge of business realities influencing Imperial’s consumer strategy and portfolio strategies, to provide insight-based advice that is actionable and commercially sound
  • Expert knowledge of insight and foresight techniques based on underlying data, research and analytics methodologies. Able to apply these to build standards for competitor intelligence.
  • Highly collaborative. Able to co-ordinate activities across multiple teams, and draw together multiple perspectives to improve standards of insight.
  • Passion for shaping Imperial's business strategy around the consumer of the future

Desired

  • 3-5 years of experience in MBB or similar strategy consulting or corporate finance role
  • Proven track record in insight business partnering; able to demonstrate the positive impact of insight-driven advice
  • Previous role in generating insights at a major advertising, marketing, brand planning agency or strategic consultancy
